About the Course



This course provides police officers with a solid understanding of how mind and body respond to stressful stimuli, convey knowledge to identify the signs and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, addictions, mood swings and suicide risk, and gives information on a variety of strategies and treatment options to prevent and respond to mental illness.

Course Objectives:


As a result of this training, the students should be able to: 

- Gain insights into daily experiences of police officers that contribute to traumas and PTSD;

- Define stress and distinguish acute stress from chronic stress;

- Establish the link between stressors, mental health, and physical wellbeing;

- Identify key players that encourage depression, PTSD, anxiety, alcoholism and the other conditions that contribute to suicidal ideations and behaviors;

- Identify signs and symptoms of suicidal ideations and behaviors;

- Adopt strategies for sustaining a positive perspective throughout a career in law enforcement; and

- Delink “who you are” from “what you do”.
